Cape Buffalo Shot Placement Guide

Cape buffalo are one of Africa’s most dangerous game animals, and proper shot placement is critical for both safety and ethical hunting. This guide shows exactly where to aim on a buffalo for both rifle and bow hunters, including broadside and quartering angles.

Cape Buffalo shot placement showing heart and lungs from the broadside view

Broadside Shot Placement (Best Option)

The most effective and recommended shot on a Cape buffalo is a broadside presentation. Aim tight behind the shoulder, approximately one-third of the way up from the brisket. This targets the heart and lower lungs, resulting in rapid blood loss and a quick, ethical kill.

Quartering Away Shot

The most effective and recommended shot on a Cape buffalo is a broadside presentation. Aim tight behind the shoulder, approximately one-third of the way up from the brisket. This targets the heart and lower lungs, resulting in rapid blood loss and a quick, ethical kill.

Frontal Shot (Advanced Only)

The frontal chest shot should only be taken by experienced hunters under professional hunter guidance. Aim low and centered between the shoulders to reach the heart. Shot placement must be precise to be effective.

Bowhunting Shot Placement

Bowhunters should wait for a perfect broadside or slight quartering away angle. Aim for the same heart-lung area shown in the diagram. Heavy arrows and fixed blade broadheads are essential, and shot distance should be kept close.

Shots to Avoid

  • Straight-on shoulder shots

  • Rear (“Texas heart”) shots

  • High lung shots

  • Steep quartering-to angles

Golden Rule:  Wait for the right shot. A passed shot is always better than a poor shot on buffalo.
